Surface Pro 3 VS 4: Differences In Price, Quality, And Technology

Hybrid laptops are some of the most popular kinds of devices to purchase. These are computers that can be navigated traditionally using a keyboard or more radically as a tablet using touchscreen technology.

Yet, there are so many hybrid laptops available on the market that customers can easily get overwhelmed.

Surface Pro 3

Microsoft in particular manufactures two hybrid laptops that are very popular, namely the Surface Pro 3 and 4.

In this article, we compare these two devices, considering their price, quality and technology.

We also make some comparisons to the newest Surface Pro in order to provide customers with a more balanced perspective.

Towards the end of the article, we offer our final thoughts on the Surface Pro 3 vs 4.

Comparison Table

Price – Surface Pro 3 VS 4

The price of the Surface Pro 3 vs 4 varies depending on which processor is used as well as how much memory is desired.

The Surface Pro 3 can be purchased on Amazon for $$$ for a machine with the 4th generation of Intel’s i5 processor. This machine also offers 8GB of RAM memory as well as 256GB of onboard SSD storage.

Alternatively, users can purchase the Surface Pro 3 with the 4th generation of Intel’s i7 Processor. This machine costs $$$ on Amazon and also comes with 8GB of RAM memory and 256GB of flash storage.

  • 8GB RAM, 256GB Sold State Drive, Micro SD Card Reader
  • 12-inch Full HD Touchscreen Display (2160×1440) Bluetooth 4.0

The Surface Pro 4, on the other hand, is a slightly more expensive device when compared with the Surface Pro 3. This newer machine can be purchased on Amazon for $$$. This model comes with 256GB of memory, 8GB of RAM and the 6th generation of Intel’s i5 processor. Alternatively, users can opt for the Surface Pro 4 with the 6th generation of Intel’s i7 processor. This machine has 256GB of memory, 8GB of Ram, and costs $$$ on Amazon.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (256 GB, 8 GB RAM, Intel Core i5)

  • Surface Pro 4 powers through everything you need to do, while being lighter than ever before
  • The 12.3″ PixelSense screen has extremely high contrast and low glare so you can work through the day without straining…
  • Go from tablet to laptop in a snap with the multi-position Kickstand and improved keyboard (Sold seperately)

Both of these devices are no longer formally offered on Microsoft’s website. Instead, Microsoft advertises the new Surface Pro.

Microsoft’s new Surface Pro costs $$$ for a version with Intel’s 7th generation, i5 chip, 128GB of SSD memory and 4GB of RAM. Furthermore, users can also purchase the newest Surface Pro for $$$ for a machine with the 7th generation of Intel’s i7 chip, 256GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM memory. Lastly, the cheapest Surface Pro available costs $$$ and comes with the 7th generation of Intel’s m3 chip, 128GB of SSD memory and 4GB of RAM.

When examining the price across all of these machines, it’s quite difficult to make a conclusion regarding the affordability of each device. Each device uses a slightly different processor and has slightly different features. Not to mention, since the Surface Pro 3 and 4 are no longer officially offered by Microsoft, customers will have to purchase them on 3rd party websites like Amazon.

While this is not a problem, the prices on these websites fluctuate widely, especially when it comes to older models of computers.

Suffice it to say that the Surface Pro 3 is generally cheaper than the Surface Pro 4, though both are significantly cheaper than the newest Surface Pro.

Quality – Surface Pro 3 VS 4

When considering the quality of displayed on the device’s screen, the Surface Pro 4 takes the cake here, though it’s a close call.  The Surface Pro 4 comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen with 2736 x 1824 resolution. Microsoft also advertises that this screen has very high contrast and is able to minimize the amount of glare featured.

Surface Pro 4

The Surface Pro 3, on the other hand, has a touchscreen with a 2160 x 1440 resolution, meaning its image quality is slightly inferior. This is considered Full HD resolution, which is still high quality but not quite as sharp as the Surface Pro 4’s screen.

The Surface Pro 3 also has a 12-inch screen which is slightly smaller than the Surface Pro 4’s screen. This feature might be conflicting, as some customers prefer the smaller screen due to its portability while others prefer a larger screen for streaming content, playing games, and using various productivity apps.

Some customers even claim that the differences in resolution between the Surface 3 and 4’s screen is negligible. Ultimately, going with either machine, you will experience stunning HD quality images.

It should be noted that the newest Surface Pro offers the same sized screen as the Surface Pro 4 as well as the same resolution. As such, if screen quality and size is on your radar when purchasing a new laptop, then we recommend the Surface Pro 4. This machine is significantly cheaper than the new Surface Pro while offering similar graphics and picture quality.

Really, the only benefit of the new Surface Pro over the Surface Pro 4 is that the former has a more efficient battery life as well as a newer processor.

Technology – Surface Pro 3 VS 4

Both the Surface Pro 3 and 4 offer hybrid technology, allowing the device to be transformed into a tablet within a matter of seconds. This is seamless technology that even a young child could master.

Both laptops also are compatible with Microsoft’s Surface Pen that can be used to navigate the touchscreen. Both of the models we linked above come with pens, but some websites offer packages without the pen. This is something to keep in mind when choosing a vendor.

Both laptops also offer about 9 hours of battery life, making them comparable in that regard. This is a relatively dynamic length of time. For comparison, the new Surface Pro offers about 14 hours of battery life.

Furthermore, both laptops run the Windows 10 Operating System. Additionally, both laptops feature Micro SD card readers. This is a great feature if you anticipate expanding the memory on your laptop.

The Surface Pro 3 features a 5MP front and rear camera. These cameras can also record video in 1080p HD quality. The Surface Pro 4 also has two cameras that can record in 1080p HD quality, though it’s rear camera can capture 8MP images.

Lastly, both are Energy Star Certified, which means they meet stringent standards for energy efficiency. This is an important consideration for many modern customers that are environmentally conscious. Ultimately, meeting these standards shows that Microsoft highly prioritizes environmental sustainability when designing and manufacturing their products.

Our Thoughts On The Surface Pro 3 VS 4

surface pro 3 and 4

We think both laptops are worthwhile purchases if you are interested in purchasing an older model of a hybrid laptop.

Many customers are interested in cutting-edge technology, but don’t want the latest machine. These machines are often times extremely expensive yet offer comparable features to their predecessors.

We think this is the case when it comes to Microsoft’s newest line of hybrid laptops, specifically the newest Surface Pro. This new machine is significantly more expensive than either the Surface Pro 3 or 4. Yet, its main difference is the new processor chip that it uses as well as the longer battery life it offers.

If battery life is an important consideration, then we recommend dishing out the extra money and going with the newest Surface Pro.

However, 9 hours of battery should be long enough for most users, making the Surface Pro 3 or 4 worthwhile purchases.

Making A Final Choice Between The Surface Pro 3 And 4

It’s clear that the Surface Pro 4 offers slightly more advanced technology than the Surface Pro 3, yet this comes with a slightly more expensive price tag.

Ultimately, we think the Surface Pro 4 would be a better purchase due to its faster processor. The Surface Pro 4’s 6th generation of Intel’s processors is much more efficient than the Surface Pro 3’s 4th generation of processors.

We think customers will actually notice a difference when using these different processors, especially in cases where graphics are highly valued.

Thus, we think gamers and anyone doing a lot of streaming will be better off purchasing the Surface Pro 4.

If affordability is the only important factor for you, then the Surface Pro 3 might cost less initially. However, you also have to take into consideration the lifespan of the device. This is not only a product of how long the laptop can successfully function but also how long the user will continue to enjoy the device.

We think the Surface Pro 3’s older processor will make the machine obsolete much sooner than the Surface Pro 4’s processor. Thus, even though you might save money in the short-term by buying the Surface Pro 3, the speed and performance of the machine might become relatively inadequate as newer hybrid laptops are released on the market.

Many people are anticipating the release of a new Surface Pro in the coming months. However, waiting for the next best machine can be a risky game to play. Many customers want a hybrid laptop immediately, and we think the Surface Pro 4 would be a perfect option for these customers.
