Malwarebytes Review: Does This Software Really Work?

When a virus or bug makes its way into your computer it can completely shut it down – costing hundreds of dollars to just have your computer cleaned and running normally.

This process can end up costing you more than you actually paid for the computer.

The worst of these viruses, “malware,” is malicious software developed by cyberattackers.

Their intent is to gain access into your computer, combing through your confidential information or disabling your computer completely.

There is a lot of anti-malware software out that promise to protect your computer from these attacks and clean whatever software has been forcefully imputed.

With today’s increased risk of cyberattacks, protection software is as necessary as keyboard or a mouse. However, finding the right one can prove to be a challenge in itself.

Though these protective products promise to detect and remove harmful threats to your devices. The truth is, some products do not perform as intended, allowing your computer to accept malicious software and causing a giant headache for you.

What Is Malwarebytes And How Does It Work?

malwarebytes review

Malwarebytes is one of the leading anti-malware software programs, compatible with Microsoft Windows, Android, MacOS, and iOS devices.

This software scans and detects malicious threats and eliminates them from your device. Or at least that is intention. However, this is not the case for all Malwarebytes programs.

Malwarebytes’ basic program is free.

Hearing the word free may sound good, especially for a product meant to protect expensive tech and your personal and sensitive information.

Trust us, in this case, free is not good.

Any Malwarebytes review will tell you the same thing.

Though the basic program eliminates malicious software, it does not scan or detect new threats. Your device could be cleaned from preexisting threats, but the next day, you could be facing another harmful cyberattack with no protection.

If you are just trying to get your computer back up and running, the free version of Malwarebytes will be fine for you. If you are looking for a protective program with the capability of scanning, detecting, and eliminating these threats, you will need the premium version of Malwarebytes. That being said, in this Malwarebytes review, we will only focus on the its premium version.

“Traditional antivirus relies on outdated signature-based technology that addresses threats at the execution stage of the attack chain. It’s reactive, one-dimensional, and apparently isn’t effective. Malwarebytes employs several proprietary technologies that work together to break the attack chain, from pre-delivery to post-execution.” Malwarebytes says.

How well does their statement hold up?

What Makes Malwarebytes Unique?

Unlike many programs that protect a computer’s internal network, Malwarebytes is an anti-malware, anti-ransomware, anti-exploit, and malicious website protection software.

Having four layers of protection is unique to Malwarebytes.

Anti-malware is common amongst many protection programs, however, anti-ransomware is not.

Ransomware is a fairly new type of facilitated malware that has become more common in recent years. Their attacks are serious and can lead to devastating consequences.

Your perfectly working computer can be completely destroyed in rather a quick amount of time.

Any important documents or files on your device can be corrupted and held at ransom by the cyberattacker.

This is the worst type of computer virus.

Say you store your banking statements and information on a computer. When an attack occurs, this information becomes encrypted. Now the attacker can use this information if they wish too, or they can demand some form of payment in order for you to get the description key required to regain control of your files.

This type of malware is no joke and protection against it is extremely necessary. The majority of antivirus protection does not protect from this type of threat.

This is Malwarebytes’ best and most important feature.

Pricing

 pricing of malwarebytes review

Malwarebytes’ premium program retails for $39.99 per year. At this price, this product is slightly more expensive than other device protecting software programs. However, for a premium program, it is in line with its competitors – even slightly cheaper than some that offer similar protection.

The $39.99 annual fee is nothing compared to the amount of money you will spend trying to fix your computer after an attack or the price of regaining control of sensitivity files.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium 3.0 – 3 PCs / 1 Year

  • Real-time Malware Protection and Removal – Three powerful technologies proactively protect you against malware that…
  • Anti-phishing and Identity Theft Protection – Malicious website blocking saves you from websites that steal your credit…
  • Fast Scanning and Light on CPU and Memory Resources – Fast scanning. Minimal CPU usage. You won’t even know it’s there.

Most computer technicians charge hundreds of dollars just to initiate diagnostics. Fixing the device will a few hundred more.

If you take your computer to BestBuy’s Geek Squad and it is in-fact infected. That could cost upwards of $5 to $600 dollars.

When you get your computer back they’ll recommend a protection program, so it doesn’t happen again. Geek Squad does have its own yearly plan for device maintenance, but that will cost you $200 per year– far more than the $39.99 Malwarebytes.

Public Perception: Customer Reviews Of Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes has history of very mixed reviews.

A lot of reviews we have come across rave about Malwarebytes ability to detect malware and eliminate threats. The consensus amongst positive reviews – this product is one of the better computer protection programs. Multiple reviews explained Malwarebytes found certain malicious software that their previous protection had missed.

Abraham, a health care provider, uses Malwarebytes at work and at home.

“Malwarebytes provides top of the line security for your computer and data systems. It works silently in the background and does not harass you with annoying pop-ups like its competitors. The program is discrete, and the interface is easy to understand. I even began using the home version of Malwarebytes for my personal computer.” Abraham said.

Abraham’s Malwarebytes review was in line with a lot of other customer reviews.

However, a lot of customers did rate this product low because of poor customer service, software uses conflicting other computer programs, and unusual billing.

Charles, a Malwarebytes customer, did not have kind words in his Malwarebytes review.

“No customers service. No 1-800 number, a human to talk with. If you have an issue they do nothing. The product sucks and really conflicted with other programs on my computer. I have to remove it from my computer 2 weeks after purchasing it. Also 1 year later they automatically bill your credit card for a 2nd year then they fight you when you ask for your money back. A very terrible company and product!” Charles said.

Like Charles, A lot of consumers share the same anger with the company.

How It Compares

Compares malwarebytes review

Malwarebytes fairs quite well with its competitors. Its ability to detect the most harmful types of threats with Its layered levels of protection, is unique to this program.

The kinds of protection Malwarebytes provides is unlike most competitors.

Its price is fairly competitive, given the features provided with the premium version. Unlike its competitors, Malwarebytes is not a traditional anti-virus program.

Though it protects against the worst types of cyber-attacks, it does not protect against very common viruses. With that, Malwarebytes is better used with another protection program, a more traditional anti-virus software.

What We Think

Malwarebytes is a hard program to stand behind, but it is also hard to say it is no good. Many people use the program with no problems and it has helped in the recovery and protection of their devices.

With its main purpose of protecting against the worst type of cyber threats, Malwarebytes is a good program. When it comes to the more common threats that can still completely shut down your computer – it is ineffective.

It really has its ups and downs.

Customers either rave about the product or completely hate it.

CNET, a leader in technology news, raves about Malwarebytes– giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

“The visual refresh, interface tweaks, and inclusion of built-in rootkit detection make it a more modern competitor. While the subscription model may not be for everyone, it’s becoming a more widely accepted standard for many security programs.” CNET explains.

Many customers have been over billed by Malwarebytes, had their computers crash while the program was installed or were unhappy with the company’s customer service.

With such mixed reviews from customers, we do not feel as good about the program as CNET does in their Malwarebytes review.

We cannot say this program is a must buy or completely useless. It is good for some people who need the highest form of protection for their devices, as long as the program is acting appropriately.

It is not good for someone who needs full protection for even the smallest of viruses – viruses that can slow your computer or shut it down. You would need to buy a traditional anti-virus program in addition to Malwarebytes.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts on malwarebytes review

Malwarebytes does work but not as a complete virus protection program.

It is made to protect against the worst types of computer viruses, but not the common ones.

As a malware protection software, it does a good job for most users, however, it is inconsistent for some.

Be cautious before purchasing Malwarebytes for your computer’s protection.

Instead of giving our stamp of approval for Malwarebytes, we suggest looking at more efficient and effective programs.

“I have been using Webroot Antivirus Internet Security Complete since 2012 after switching from Norton. Prior to Webroot, in 2011 I suffered a virus attack that infected part of my computer. While Norton did stop the attack, I still lost some of my email data, so Norton didn’t stop the entire attack. I switched to Webroot, and have not had a single attack since, nor lost any data.” Greg said.
