Best Backup OptionsThere are several backup solutions on offer to cater for our varied needs. For example, the needs of a single computer user at home are different from that of a large organisation.

There three major types of backup systems namely: full, incremental and differential. Full backup allows one to make full a copy of all data files in the computer. This option is good for an average home user and could be done weekly.

Differential and incremental backups are mostly used in organisations and are done several times a week. Differential back up is done to back up files that have changed since the last full backup. They take longer and use much space but their restoration time is much shorter.

An incremental backup backs up files that have been changed since the last backup (whether full or incremental). They are quicker and take less space but their restoration time is much longer. You have to restore the full back up and incremental backup since the ‘event’ happened (an ‘event’ is whatever occurred to affect the data storage system).

Software developers have created an array of backup software that offer a wide range of options to back up and restore data. Each system is made to fit a different set of needs. Here are some common software tools.

Recommended Software Tools

‘Files in use’ backup tools are software that back up data while the computer is active. This is an excellent tool to update the backup if you desire to backup files as they are changed. Another option is ‘one click’ back up tool. Files are backed up in full by this tool at a click of a button. Other people prefer a ‘complete system’ back up tool. This tool saves the entire hard drive. It includes the registry, the application files, and the operating system. This tool is recommended for systems that are prone to viruses and malware.

Hardware Options

You can use several data backup and storage options. Each option depends on the size of data stored, the cost of storage and the security of the data stored. You can use all of the options together at a significant cost but offer high security and reliability.

The most commonly used method to back up data is the use of a hard drive. It offers an excellent local storage that can be moved out of the site. The user is in full control of the data. Data is manually stored in the hard drive. However, the hard disk is prone to damage such as crashing, being stolen or damage. A large amount of data requires several hard drives for backup. If you have under 4.7GB of data that you want to easily transport you can always burn it to a blank DVD.

Another option is to hire a data storage company. Data is stored offsite into a secure location and can be accessed when needed. Data backup is automatic and sometimes scheduled. It offers data protection against possible damage on site. However, the cost of data backup is very high and out of reach for small user. There are also tape backup services like CXP who are cost effective if you are looking for a secure backup service.

To The Cloud

It offers protection against disasters on site and is less expensive. However, there could be interruptions in cases when internet connection is slow or the site is undergoing maintenance.
