portable usb drives or flash memory data storage devices represent the modern alternative to floppy disks. With a high storage capacity, small and lightweight, portable USB drives allow the the transport and transfer of videos, movies, documents or photos between PCs at a very high rate and with maximum of efficiency. The advantages of portable USB drives are more numerous over the rest of portable storage devices and here we point to floppy discs and compact discs (CDs) too. All computer operating systems are compatible with the flash cards, from Windows and Mac OS X to Linux. In terms of technical design, the core of portable USB drives consists of a small printed circuit board protected by a plastic, rubber or metal cover.

Portable USB drives are based on a technological combination that led to the design for advantageous data storage environments while achieving a low power consume and maintaining costs low. The applications of the flash memory card are very extensive and serve for a huge number of electronic equipment that we depend on, from GPS devices and iPods to MP3 players and digital cameras. Moreover, portable USB drives have become basic tools in the equipment of network administrators that can load them with software for troubleshooting, recovery and maintenance. Such an options is a lot more rewarding than carrying around a pack of CDs with drives.

At present, the very comprehensive storage space provided by portable USB drivers gives one the chance to also have installers for updating and system re-installation available within immediate reach. Then, Portable USB drives can also help transfer anti-virus software on an infected computer, contributing to a potential archiving on the host device as well. Computer forensics and criminal justice also rely on the use of portable USB drives for a wide number of situations. When Microsoft designed a specific forensic application, the extraction of digital evidence became possible a lot more easily.

portable usb dvd drives have become a cheap data carrier solution, and to most users, this piece of hardware has already proved its efficiency. The drive could also turn into a backup medium for point-of-sale systems, but additional technology may be required for the purpose. Reliability and resistance, these are two other inherent features of portable USB drives that we should mention before concluding. Pretty different from hard drives, memory flash cards are not fragile and use very little power. All you need to be careful with is not to misplace or leave behind the device that can be easily lost because of the small size.
